A documentary photography project by Manchester photographer Gill Moore, aiming to discover which is the most popular bench in Chorlton, a suburb in South Manchester, England. The project uses the bench as a symbol; it is the juncture of people and open space and highlights the importance of shared green areas within urban communities and the diversity of the people that use them.
The work aims to illustrate how having access to urban green spaces is important to the local community and to encourage appreciation of a person's immediate environment. This positive imagery will hopefully inspire other people to use these shared areas. Many thanks for the fantastic support this project has enjoyed so far, particularly to all those who have taken part.
Initial photography started in January 2008, with 7 shortlisted benches chosen in February 2008. Further photography of these benches will be continuing until Summer 2008.
This project has been selected for exhibition at the Chorlton Arts Festival 2008 May 16th - 24th at Chorlton Library, Barlow Moor Road, Chorlton. Due to space restrictions the Chorlton Library exhibition can only feature 30 selected images from the project. A second exhibition at a larger gallery venue is under discussion for late Summer 2008 together with production of a limited edition book. If you would like to purchase a print or postcard of any of the exhibited images please contact the photographer.
